Restraints I

I've been commissioned a few times to rework old pieces, and it's one of those things that I would never do on my own, but am always really pleased with when it happens. I like to forget about everything I make the instant paint dries. Soooooo, projects like this are probably really good for me.

I may have to do more of this series, I really like how this one turned out.

The original painting, from 2005, I think. I clearly remember it being one of the first Official Paintings I did, since it was on an actual canvas. It was also supposed to be part of a series of some sort, but instead was turned into...

this wallpaper. Man, back in the day of small squarey monitors. Feelin' old!

This dude was also used in a logo for a UK film co around 2006. The actual logo is long lost to hard drive death and my general failure at preserving anything, but I do still have a few related sketches.

True Story...

At one point, roundabout 2005, I felt it'd be a good idea for me to try drawing consistent characters. SHOCKINGLY, this plan did not bear fruit; I'm bored with my own drawing style halfway through everything I draw. Clearly, I should have given my animation major a leetle more practical thought before going through with it.

This one's new - it's lookin' like my consistency has not improved at all in the last 6 years. Go me!

All the rest of these are from 2004-5. And then I pretty much never drew these dudes again.

I just remember this guy's name was Connor Meile, after the line of vacuum cleaners. Not sure why, precisely, but they are good vacuums.

After drawing this guy, a very nice girl was enthusiastically emailing me about him, which was a little weird to me, as I think of everything I do as an isolated exercise in a corner of my apt, and am somehow always shocked to find out other people can see these things, too. Also, it's a little worrying to think that people may be looking to me for inspiration, since I spend the majority of my time drawing the dumbest ball-related puns I can think of.

He's carrying is some sort of weird old poison bottle I wanted at one point, but was not willing to spend 150 bucks on, because that is ridiculous. I'm sure somebody did, though. The jerk.

I really like double-breasted coats, but only on other people. I don't have time personally for that many buttons.

Adam, who is part owl, despite having neither wisdom nor comically round spectacles.

A lot of people still give me that exact same look.

I'm not even sure what this look means, but I can relate to it.

Dunno how he was planning on walking on those owl legs.

Sadly nerdily, I've also always had a thing for high collars and suspenders.

This sketch was originally captioned 'So I guess headphones make anyone look cool??' and got me a job with a book co in the UK when someone there came across it while looking for 'cool headphones'. Again, weird.

Super inconsistent, but I rather like this set.

Sherlock Holmes & the Mystery of the Missing Pants

I admit to having huge Sherlock Homes boners, huge nerdy literary boners, since high school. And now, ten years later, it's finally cool! How bout that.

Despite being played by a succession of increasingly old dudes over the last 100-odd years, Holmes was only like 27 at the start of the books. He was just kinda farting around Uni, dividing his time between beating up corpses and hanging out in his room listening to The Cure for days on end.

It's never really resolved if he was actually going to school or just sneaking in at night to fondle beakers and cackle maniacally, since he never actually goes back to the place once he starts shacking up with Watson. PERHAPS HE BECAME INTERSTED IN CHEMISTRY OF ANOTHER SORT, HAR HAR HAR GEDDIT.

Holmes. Holmes, this is. This is an eyeball, Holmes.
This is and eyeball and it is IN MY WATERGLASS, HOLMES. WHY IS THERE AN EYEBALL IN MY WATERGLASS HOLMES???

The most important element of Watson: an air of sorely-tried patience.

So much sweet action going on juuuuuust offscreen in the books.

From a 2007 sketchbook...why is Watson never thin as a lath & brown as a nut in any of the adaptations?
HE'S SUPPOSED BE, DAMNIT.

This was in my 2007 folder...and clearly titled 'Sherlock Holmes is Wearing No Pants', which he clearly is..n't, but I have zero recollection of drawing it, and even less idea why. Sooo enjoy, I guess.

Ang St. Ie

Angst Practice
Ang Saint. Ie, (LOL ANGSTY, GET IT) pulled from the Angst Practice painting, which I think was the first thing I ever painted in acrylic. Making fun of shit right from the start! CLEARLY I AM GOING TO GO FAR IN ART. Also, he's so emo that he NEVER OPENS HIS EYES. Oh yeah. Beat that, teenagers! All his tattoos are based on obnoxiously happy 1950's children's toys. If I ever get a sleeve done, it's going to be like that.
